Searching by Name

To search by name for an individual who is, or has been, licensed as a North Carolina CPA, enter the individual’s last name and first name in the appropriate fields. If you are unsure of the exact spelling of the name, you may perform a wildcard search by entering the first few letters of the first and last name followed by an asterisk (*) [last name = smi* and first name = jo*]. If you enter only one or two letters in each field but do not include an asterisk (*), your search will fail.

When searching for a name which includes an apostrophe (‘), you may perform a wildcard search and limit the results as follows: enter M*Donald to search for all names such as MacDonald or McDonald or use the wildcard multiple times in the search, like O*C* to search for a name like O’Conner or O’Connor.

If you search for an individual by name and enter "Johnson" in the field, "Last Name," and “*” in the field, “First Name,” the database will return basic information on any individual whose last name is "Johnson" You must then scroll through the list to find the individual for whom you are searching and then click on the “details” link to obtain more detailed information about that individual.

If you search for a CPA firm by name and enter "Johnson" in the field "Firm Name," the database will return basic information on any CPA firm or CPE sponsor whose name is Johnson." You must then scroll through the list to find the firm for which you are searching and then click on that firm’s name to obtain more detailed information, such as the registration status, about the firm.

NOTE:  When searching for a CPA firm by name and the firm name contains a first and last name ("Leslie Jane Public, CPA"), enter the first name ("Leslie*") in the field "Firm Name."

When searching for a CPA firm by name and the firm name contains several last names ("Animal, Vegetable, and Mineral, LLP") enter the first name in the series ("Animal*") in the field "Firm Name."

If your search is not processing, make sure you have clicked on the "Submit" field. After each search, click on the “reset” button or the “new search” button.

Make sure you have entered the proper information in the correct field. For example, if you enter a licensee's name in the certificate number field, the database will not process the search.

Searching by Certificate Number or Social Security Number

When searching for an individual by certificate number or Social Security number, you must enter the full number. Certificate numbers vary in length, but all Social Security numbers are nine digits in length.

When searching for an individual by certificate number or Social Security number, do not insert leading zeros or spaces when entering the number.

When searching for an individual by Social Security number, you must enter the number in the following format:  111-22-3333.

Although an individual's Social Security number may be used as a search parameter, it will not be displayed in the search results.

If your search is not processing, make sure you have clicked on the "Submit" field. After each search, click on the “reset” button or the “new search” button.

Make sure you have entered the proper information in the correct field. For example, if you enter a licensee's name in the certificate number field, the database will not process the search.

Searching by City or State

All licensees, CPA firms, and CPE sponsors are asked to designate a mailing address to which the Board sends all correspondence. For a licensee, the preferred address may be the home or business address. For a CPA firm or CPE sponsor, the preferred address may be that of a branch office or the main office.

When searching for a licensee or CPA firm by city or state, the database will return basic information about all licensees or all CPA firms and CPE sponsors that have listed that particular city as the mailing address. You will then need to scroll down the list to find the licensee or CPA firm or CPE sponsor for which you are searching and then click on the “details” link to obtain specific information, on that licensee, CPA firm, or CPE sponsor.

When searching for a licensee or CPA firm by city and the licensee, CPA firm, or CPE sponsor does not appear in the search results, try searching for the licensee, CPA firm, or CPE sponsor using cities that surround the city used in the initial search. For example, if a city search using "Apex" did not return the licensee for whom you are searching, try searching for "Raleigh," "Cary," "Fuquay," or "Holly Springs."

If your search is not processing, make sure you have clicked on the "Submit" field. After each search, click on the “reset” button or the “new search” button.

Make sure you have entered the proper information in the correct field. For example, if you enter a licensee's name in the certificate number field, the database will not process the search.
